Composite and Direct Restorative Materials for Chairside Restorations

Direct restorative composites are the most frequently placed restorative material in general dentistry. This category groups universal, bulk-fill and flowable resin composites with glass ionomer and compomer materials, stocked across the shade range used for anterior esthetics and posterior load-bearing restorations.

Composite Material Types Stocked

  • Universal nanohybrid and microhybrid composites - General-purpose light-cured resin composites for anterior and posterior use, with polishable esthetic surfaces. Lines include 3M Filtek, Ivoclar Tetric, Kerr Herculite and Dentsply TPH.
  • Bulk-fill composites (sculptable and flowable) - Higher depth-of-cure resins placed in thicker increments to reduce layering in posterior preparations. Available as sculptable body material and as flowable base material.
  • Flowable composites - Low-viscosity resins for liners, small preparations, pit and fissure areas and as a base under sculptable composite. Dispensed from fine-tip syringes.
  • Glass ionomer and resin-modified glass ionomer - Fluoride-releasing restorative and base materials that chemically bond to tooth structure. GC Fuji and 3M lines are stocked in capsule and hand-mix formats.
  • Compomers and core build-up materials - Polyacid-modified composites and dedicated core materials for foundation restorations under indirect work.

Unit-Dose and Syringe Delivery

Composites are stocked in two delivery formats. Syringes hold a larger volume for practices that dispense per restoration, while single-use unit-dose compules are pre-portioned for one-patient use and reduce cross-contamination handling. High-volume practices often carry both, with syringes for routine posterior work and compules for surgical or higher-isolation cases.

Composite is the anchor consumable in restorative dentistry and the SKU group most commonly placed on standing orders in general practices and dental service organizations. Because a practice consumes composite in stocked shades continuously, case pricing and supply continuity matter for materials management planning across a group's locations. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between bulk-fill and conventional composite?

Conventional composites are placed in thin increments, usually up to 2 mm, and cured layer by layer to manage polymerization. Bulk-fill composites are formulated with higher translucency and modified initiators for a greater depth of cure, so they can be placed in increments up to 4 or 5 mm depending on the product. Both sculptable and flowable bulk-fill formats are stocked.

What is the difference between syringe and unit-dose composite?

Syringe composite holds several grams of material dispensed per restoration and suits high-throughput practices. Unit-dose compules are single-patient pre-filled tips that reduce handling and cross-contamination and dispense directly into the preparation. The resin chemistry is the same; the difference is packaging and volume per unit.

Which composite shades are stocked?

Composites are stocked across the VITA classical shade range plus bleach shades, with body, enamel, dentin and translucent shades available on esthetic lines. Shade availability differs by brand and product family. Bulk-fill lines carry a narrower universal shade set than layering composites.

Can practices order composite in bulk?

Yes. Composite and direct restorative materials are stocked in case and bulk quantities for general practices, group practices, dental service organizations, community health centers and licensed dental distributors. Standing order programs are available for the highest-velocity SKUs. Contact our procurement team for tiered case pricing and standing order setup.

What composite products should be in a practice formulary?

A core composite formulary typically covers a universal nanohybrid in the practice's stocked shades, a flowable for liners and small preparations, a sculptable or flowable bulk-fill for posterior efficiency, a glass ionomer or resin-modified glass ionomer for bases and pediatric restorations, and a core build-up material. MAP Medical builds consolidated composite formulary packages matched to procedure mix - contact our team for an assessment.
